Basic communications have made strong advances in just the last few years with broadband and other forms of high speed internet becoming much more prevalent or at least available in Vietnam than in many parts of so called 1st world countries such as the United States where in many states when asked what high speed connections exist, one is met with a blank stare or is referred to a satellite dish. Whereas in just 2001 it was difficult to obtain a telephone line in some cases even in large cities, in just the last 2 years, not only are telephones the norm, but high speed internet connections of all types are becoming more common. In the countryside it’s quite a bit different but with recent deals signed with Intel to invest 350 million USD in chip manufacturing and IT education in Vietnam the future seems to hold an even greater promise of high technology than Vietnams neighbors.

POSTAL SERVICE:
A regular international post service is available. In addition there are some new, special services: Express Mail Service (EMS). The domestic EMS ensures that letters and small parcels are delivered within 24-48 hours. International EMS has relations with nearly 30 countries worldwide, with a delivery time ranging from 2 to 10 days. Air mail and small parcels must however be subject to additional charges. Express money transfer is also available; money is delivered to the receiver within 24 hours.

INTERNET:
Internet while once upon a time in Vietnam was dismal, slow and expensive, in recent years with the advent of microwave cable as well as the newly available DSL, Vietnam is heading toward the future showing real promise of high-speed connections. There’s been wi-fi availability at resports on Phu Quoc and the Internet age is finally dawning on the country in general. Internet café’s are everywhere and recently even private vacation rental homes are beginning to offer non-dial up Internet connections.

INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE CALLS:
Are expensive when made from Vietnam but getting more competitive all the time and in the last year or so, internet telephone calls are becoming more common and are available at the many internet café’s in the country
